Luang Phor Niphon Apipasanno, of Wat Pa Salanoi in Loei province, has made great contributions to Buddhism. The highly respected abbot of the forest temple in Dan Sai district has turned Wat Somdej Phu Ruea Ming Muang, a temple in nearby Phu Ruea district, into a Buddhism museum with exquisite paintings, wood carvings, scuptures, a tunnel and a man-made cave for people to visit and learn Dhamma.

What first comes to your mind at the mention of Buddhist temples? Monks in saffron robes collecting alms in the morning, striking a bell, giving a sermon to  devout Buddhists and performing religious rites are among answers.  Free accommodation at a temple near Bangkok's business hub may probably be an unexpected thing.

But, the unexpected thing happens at Wat Suthiwararam on Charoen Krung Road in Sathon district. The temple has made many rooms at a four-storey building available for members of the public to stay at no charge.

Wat Suthiraram (also spelled Wat Sutthi Wararam) has recently been in the media spotlight after offering 25 rooms left available at its learning centre to people to stay overnight free of charge.  Visitors are required to provide reasons for their stay.

The third and fouth floors of this four-storey building that houses the Center of Buddhist Studies and Social Development, or the learning centre, at Wat Suthiwararam are turned into free-of-charge accommodation.
