"ZogZag" tour by Nart -the foodie

The Thai word "zogzag" is used to describe the way I explore sois (side streets) in Bangkok and other areas in search of interesting things there.

I call this blog zogzag, a Thai expression that captures my curiosity about places and little-known things. Through my wandering tours, I seek out delicious, affordable food and hidden gems in Bangkok and other corners of Thailand.

But the journey is about more than food. Walking along these side streets opens a window into the history and culture of old communities, markets, temples, shrines and other amazing places and the everyday lives of local residents.

Siam Commercial Bank, the country's first bank operated by Thais, is located along the Chao Phraya River near Talad Noi market on Charoen Krung Road. Students learning history might be familiar with the name "Bank Siam Kammachon'' as the bank was previously called.

Taking a stroll along a soi to escape traffic congestion.

Walking along Bangkok sois (side streets or alleys) has become my favorite hobby during my weekends or even a few hours before going to work on weekdays. Each soi has many tales to tell. I find not only yummy dishes along the routes, but also beautiful scenery there. Old buildings and wooden houses built years or decades ago have historical and cultural values. Some places are well preserved for new generations to learn their history. City dwellers living in communities are as friendly as my rural folk. I feel relaxed whenever taking a stroll along a soi amid traffic congestion on main roads. Food is also cheap and the taste is second to none.  It's worth a visit.

Soi or Trok Captain Bush (Captain Bush alley) is one of interesting places on Charoen Krung Road, Thailand's first paved road. This alley is named after John Bush, late British captain who had played a key role in the harbour development during the reign of King Rama IV. He was the first director-general of the Marine Department.

Let's explore unseen places in Bangkok!

Bangkok has a lot of interesting places to visit and experience the way of living of people there. Each place has its own charm. Several old communities located along small sois or side streets have a vibrant living culture that look like ''living museums'' to me. Delicious food and Thai desserts with affordable prices are also available along the routes I visited.  As a rural woman living in the big city for over 20 years, I find these unseen places I've explored are worth visiting and help brighten up my life in the so-called concrete jungle.  Let's come and explore unseen places along Bangkok sois together!
